Hi Zaid,

As you may well know, there are a growing number of individuals who are
working on the concept of an Open and Networked PhD (ONPhD) on WikiVersity.
This is an interesting concept. To quote from the Wikiversity page:

"*An ONPhD does not require affiliation to a university, but does require
the publication of a thesis, that is assessed by peers to criteria. To date
an ONPhD is not recognised as a PhD, but we do hope to establish a process
where it can be shown to be equivalent to, if not an improvement on, the
traditional PhD criteria and assessment."*

In an open world -- there is freedom of choice insofar learning is
concerned.
