Hi Kim,
Patents, as you know, cover the implementation of an idea. As software
systems are functional systems composed of modules (subroutines, etc.), the
question about the "integrity of a message" is reduced to the question
whether the implementation of the subsystem works or not.
I think it is useful to distinguish between ideas, implementations, and
expressions, as they have different dynamics of development and different
types of openness.
I have been primarily interested in the dynamics of development of science,
software and OER, in the context of innovation research, sociology of
technology, and learning theories. Different forms of openness become
particularly interesting in this context.
