[Oer-community] On-line education is using a flawed Creative Commons license

David has argued in the past that it is sad that now when we buy ebooks 
that "we buy but we don't get." The NC license is an example of control 
beyond the giving similar to the control beyond the sale that the 
vendors are exerting. People who give their content and then want to 
control how people use it by adding restrictions are in this genre.
This is not to say that this is good or bad, but let's recognize it for 
what it is a restriction and control. For example, If you give me a pair 
of skates and then tell me that I can only use them on a free pond 
rather than pay and go to the closed rink then you are exerting control 
and restricting my use.
My sister has told me that when she dies (God forbid!) she wants to be 
buried in a plain wooden box. As we are talking about perceptions, I 
have perceived this as her wanting to control us beyond the grave and 
restrict our choices, possibly even make her family look cheap! This may 
not be evil, but it is restrictive and controlling and not FREE.

By the way I use NC in some cases. This is not a principle with me. We 
have used it when we WANT commercialization. In partnering with small 
companies we have used a CC-NC licence so that ONLY that company can 
sell the product, but we at the university can use it however we want.
So, I do agree with David (not just with his "You buy but you don't get" 
observation) but also with the fact that each license has its use. But I 
don't agree with Stephen that adding a restriction like NC makes the 
product freer. It restricts freedom in a milder way than the 
restrictions on proprietary content, but it is still a restriction.
