Dear Susan and all,

to provide further OER input as asked (next to metadata and open access):

Based on several OER projects we have started to connect and federate online repositories of digital resources (only those with strict open access policy!):
Currently we are harvesting 14 organizational repositories from agriculture and aquaculture with > 500,000 resources.
But that is only the starting point for a broader federation and harvesting together with a social platform and online communities:
More about the VOA3R consortium here: www.voa3r.eu<http://www.voa3r.eu> and http://voa3r.cc.uah.es/

This year, we have started the biggest project for federating and harvesting OERs and online repositories for primary and secondary schools:
The aim is to introduce eLearning and innovative pedagogical concepts including usage and production of OERs in all schools across whole Europe.
Therefore 2,000 schools and 10,000 teachers from 27 countries are supported and join the pilot testing of the online services, regional communities and repositories (for different subjects).
Open Discovery Space will hopefully change the educational systems and practice in Europe, see: www.opendiscoveryspace.eu<http://www.opendiscoveryspace.eu>

And beginning of next year, the project for Inspiring Science Education will add additional efforts and tools for strengthening OERs and their usage in teaching science in schools.
The main target group will be teachers (like in Open Discovery Space) as required facilitators for the change.
More information will follow when started.

Finally I could add more here but I wanted to focus on the main initiatives first.

And I'm interested to learn more about other initiatives!

Best wishes
Christian

With best regards

Christian Stracke

Dear Jennie and colleagues,

Thank you for your message and perhaps there are other colleagues in Africa who would like to comment on how to organize collaboration ...

Thinking of another region as well, the European Commission opened a public consultation from mid August to mid November of this year on "Opening up Education http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/education_culture/consult/open_en.htm.

The resulting Rethinking Education strategy was announced on 20 November http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-12-1233_en.htm .

And one of the points made is: "Technology, in particular the internet, must be fully exploited. Schools, universities and vocational and training institutions must increase access to education via open educational resources."

Do any of you want to comment on the importance of this announcement in the context of our discussion of potential means of collaborating to collect comprehensive information on OER initiatives by region?

Best,

Susan

Dear Colleagues

Unfortunately Catherine Ngugi, Saide's OER Africa Project Director is travelling at the moment but I am sure that she and the rest of the OER Africa team would support all collaborative initiatives as that has been key in the project from inception. One of the project's specific areas of collaboration is around teacher education through the African Teacher Education Network and other areas of collaboration have been in health and agriculture. www.oerafrica.org<http://www.oerafrica.org>

Dear colleagues,

Would others on the African content have any comments to add to Poncelet's about collaboration to identify OER initiatives?

Best,

Susan
