Miguel anticipated this message....

Dear colleagues,

We are now reaching the end of the period of discussion of a global mapping of OER initiatives. The almost three-week discussion ranged over other topics as well - the importance of metadata and licensing issues stimulated an active exchange of information and commentary. The importance of linking with the Open Access Community was also raised.

Judging from the conversation, there are some members of this group who feel there are good reasons to collect information for a database of OER initiatives that could then generate various visual representations, such as a world map.

To summarize some of the points that seemed to have some consensus:

1 Free and Open Source Software, such as Open Street Map, should be used

2 A definition is needed for OER initiatives/projects to be captured initially

3 A format for capturing single institutional initiatives, consortia, networks, etc.

4 Data could be collected for each OER initiative 1) on a form (such as the Open Access form <http://www.openaccessmap.org/#oa_popup_add> ) and 2) drawn from various registries and other sources.

5 Limited information should be collected to allow 1) viewing the initiative web site for information and 2) connecting with a person for further information/collaboration:

       OER Initiative name

       OER Initiative web site

       Contact person name

       Contact person email

       Latitude and Longitude

6 Organization might follow the model of the Global Open Access Map with a point of coordination and crowdsourcing the information through interested/willing groups.

Best,

Susan
